Commitment Award

Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek

The Davis Cup Commitment Award is presented by the ITF to players who have shown long-standing dedication to representing their country in this prestigious competition. The Award was conceived as part of the ITF’s 2013 Centenary celebrations and was launched at the 100th Davis Cup Final in 2012.

Prior to the introduction of a new competition format in 2019, the award was given to players who had competed in 20 Home & Away ties or 50 ties at any level of the competition. Under the revised criteria for 2019 onwards, players accumulate points by competing in Davis Cup and qualify for a Commitment Award when they reach 40 points.

Players score points in the following way:

2 points per tie at the Finals Group and Knock-out Stages (maximum of 4 points per year across both) 1 point per Qualifier tie 2 points per World Group I and II Play-off tie 2 points per World Group I and II tie 1 point per Regional Group III-V tie

In order to transition between the new 2019 criteria and those used previously, a player’s Davis Cup record will be transformed into a points score.

Players will receive 2.5 points per Home & Away tie played (Tier 1) or 1 point for all other ties played at either Home & Away or round-robin level (Tier 2). Points will be allocated depending on which tier a player has scored most points.

For example, if a player has played 10 Home & Away ties and 35 ties at any level of the competition, their Tier 1 score in points would be 25 (2.5 x 10) = a 50% rate of progression. Their Tier 2 score would be 35 (1 x 35) = a 70% rate of progression.

The player’s overall rate of progression would, therefore, be considered to be 70% (as they had progressed most in Tier 2). This means they would be awarded 28 points under the new system (70% of the target 40) and would require a further 12 points to achieve the Award. For administrative purposes, a players’ rate of progression will be rounded to the nearest whole number.

Over 360 players have achieved the Award, and presentations are made at ties throughout the year. All recipients are recognised on an honours board at the ITF headquarters.
